In Response - a working title for a solo show
I am proposing an exhibition of paintings (and possibly drawings) spanning post pandemic to now. Each work in this exhibition is in direct response to the daily onslaught of political, social and personal punches, that women face. The aim is not to reach resolution, or even understanding, but to digest and imagine a means to cope, support, recover, and subvert.
For example, The painting “Breakthrough” is of three women seated at a table performing an experiment. The woman in the center is attempting to balance an egg, while one works the stopwatch and the other takes notes. This painting is in direct response to the defunding of The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) in 2024. Another painting, “Under a Virgo Sky”, depicts three women gathered around a large pit filled with eggs. It is night; one holds a lantern aloft while the other two appear to be adding eggs to the pit. This painting is in response to an Executive Order aimed at dismantling “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” programs. On a personal level, the painting “Top Up”, is in response to the death her 96-year-old mother and the grief as well as emotional and physical exhaustion that overtook following the services. “Top Up”, is in response to the death of Serena's 96-year-old mother and the subsequent grief, emotional and physical exhaustion following. The viewer is invited into a cozy cafe, with enticing sweets, hydration, opportunity to connect, refresh, retreat or ponder the formal garden through the window beyond. The roof is removed, exposing customers to what appears to be a storm retreating.
